Ute Hoops: Why so tiny?

Fear the Larry

(Editors Note: I’m still too shell-shocked from 10 turnovers in 2 games to talk about Utah Football.  So today an article about Ute Hoops)

Now at the risk of alienating all my readers, I have some concerns about where Coach Larry is going with this thing.  Now just so all the cards are on the table, I didn’t like the Coach Larry hire, and how Chris Hill has neglected the hoops program including his treatment of its coaches is borderline criminal.

And I realize there is some rule now that makes it verboten to do anything but celebrate the genius of Coach Larry, but I think this concern is real.

First let me also say that Larry has brought some nice talent in his short time.  Must be nice recruiting with Pac-12 beside your name when the little brothers went with WCC.  But at the end of the day, aren’t we going to need some size?

The Roster for 2012-2013 looks like this as long as Jeremy Olsen returns

Dawson 6-6 JR, Dean 5-10 JR, Dotson 6-4 JR, Farr 6-6 SR, Hines 6-0 SR, Martin 6-4 SR, Matthews 6-5 SO, Odunsi 6-3 SO, Storey 5-10 So, Washburn 6-10 SR, Hearily 6-6 FR, Loveridge 6-6 FR, Seymore 6-3 FR, Olsen 6-10 FR

The first thing you’ll notice is that is 14 guys, so someone has to go.  And that’s if Larry doesn’t sign anyone else.  Next you’ll notice 2 guys over 6-6.  For 2013-14 that number drops to one.  In addition, 2013-14 has only four open roster spots unless we have even more departures.  Just for comparison sake, the 1998 Roster had 7 guys 6-8 or taller (at least Colo Ute told me that and I trust him).

Like I said, I like some of the talent we’ve added but, this isn’t a team that can win in the Pac-12.  And I think that is worth discussing.
